Rivalries are one of the main reasons people love college football. They tend to bring out the best games, the best moments, and the most passion from its players and fans. There are a lot of ways to analyze and rank the best rivalries (history, traditions, teams, etc.). SbS Football wanted to see what rivalry between two FBS opponents from the same state has been the most competitive in recent years.

Rather than look at the entire history of a series or what series has the best traditions, we wanted to analyze what rivalries have been the best since 2000 from a purely competitive standpoint. Our criteria for ranking the rivalries is solely focused on the actual games, and does not consider team rankings, season records, national title implications, attendance, or any other “outside” factors.

In order for the in-state matchup to be considered in our rankings, the games between the two state opponents needed to match certain criteria. In all, 34 in-state games are included in our rankings. Below is the criteria we utilized to select the in-state rivalries to be evaluated:
  • The two FBS teams must both located in the same state (i.e. our list does not consider rivalries like Michigan vs. Ohio State, Florida vs. Georgia, etc.)
  • The two teams must have played one another every year since 2000 (our list excludes in-state rivalries like Texas vs. Texas A&M, Florida vs. Miami, etc.)
  • At least one team in the rivalry must currently play in one of the power 5 conferences (ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12, or SEC)
  • Our analysis only includes regular season games and does not include any conference championships or bowl games
We then utilized the following scoring system (series points and game points) to help determine our rankings of the 34 in-state rivalries.

Series Points
Each rivalry was awarded points based on how close the series record has been since 2000 (14 games in each series):
  • Series record 7-7: 100 points
  • Series record 8-6: 50 points
  • Series record 9-5: 25 points
  • Series record 10-4: 0 points
  • Series record 11-3: -25 points
  • Series record 12-2: -50 points
  • Series record 13-1 or 14-0: -100 points
Additional points were given to each rivalry based on the longest winning streak by one team. The shorter the longest winning streak by a team was, the more points were awarded.

Game Points
If any of the 14 games within the series went into overtime, it was awarded 25 points. For the non-overtime games, points were awarded based on the margin of victory:
  • 1 – 3 margin: 15 points
  • 4 – 7 margin: 10 points
  • 8 – 13 margin: 5 points
  • 14 – 21 margin: 0 points
  • 22 – 30 margin: -5 points
  • 31+ margin: -10 points
Additional points were awarded to each game that was tied going into the fourth quarter or where the winning team was losing going into the fourth quarter.
