SbS Fantasy League: 2016 Season Preview

September 10, 2016 by SbS Football Staff | with 0 comments

During the 2016 season, SbS Football will once again be simulating a fantasy football season in which the teams in the league are based on where NFL players are from (their hometown state).

This will be the third year of the SbS Fantasy Football League. In 2014, the Gulf Region team (players from Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi) won the first ever SbS Fantasy League Championship by defeating the Northeast team in the title game. And in 2015, the Florida team narrowly edged the Gulf Region team 111.1 to 110.7 in the championship game.

The League is designed to provide a unique illustration of what parts of the country produce star players in the NFL. Although fantasy football is not a true measure of the best players in pro football (and usually considers only offensive skill players), more often than not, a good fantasy player is also a good NFL player.

Below are some of key facts of the 2016 SbS Fantasy Football League.

Overview of League
The SbS Fantasy Football League is based on a typical fantasy format.
  • Basics – ten teams, two divisions, and a 13 week regular season schedule
  • Playoffs – six teams qualify (three from each division); division winners get a first round bye (week 14); semi-finals are week 15 and the Fantasy Championship is week 16
  • Scoring – 1 point for every 20 yards passing and 10 yards rushing/receiving; 3 points for a TD thrown and 6 points for a TD scored (rushing/receiving); 3 points for a FG; 1 point for extra-point kicks; 1 point for a 2-point conversion thrown and 2 points for a 2-point conversion scored
  • Starting Lineups – 1 QB, 2 RB's, 3 WR's, 1 TE and 1 K (no defenses); starting lineups for each team will be based on the highest ranked players by position for that specific week (source: ESPN.com); lineups will be set one hour before kickoff of the Thursday night games and adjusted as needed leading up to Sunday kickoffs

Overview of Teams
The ten teams that make up the SbS Fantasy Football League were developed by dividing the United States into ten geographical regions based on where NFL players are from (their hometown state).

The ten teams were created through two main principles: 1) each team has a similar percentage of current NFL players from its state(s); and, 2) the state(s) that make up each team are in a similar region of the United States.

Because NFL players come from some states more frequently than others, certain teams will be based solely on players from one state (California, Florida and Texas), while other teams will have players from multiple states.

Below is a list of the ten teams that make up our two divisions, including the current percentage of NFL players from the state(s) that make up the team.
